Overall, I think they accomplished just telling a geniune story of two people who were in love and couldn't be together.

2046 - I was pretty disappointed with this one. Not for any special reason, but I intend on using this here blog for the keeping track of the films and the music that I have seen or heard this year. That way, I can look back at the end of this year and say.....Wow, that was the best movie or album I've seen/heard all year. Is this important?

Movies:

King Kong - thought this movie was bad ass. It had a few parts that really brought back that epic movie feeling that I used to get as a kid watching "Indiana Jones" or "Star Wars." Before that starts any shit, I don't think the movie was as good as either one of those two I just mentioned. But, the acting was very nicely done by everyone and I thought Kong looked fucking great.

Munich - good movie, not sure I could qualify it as great only seeing it once. The first thing that stands out about this movie is Eric Bana. He's better than good in this movie, he's great. Now I'm not an expert on the subject, so I'm not really sure how well this movie matches up with the actual events, but I didn't go to see the movie to learn the real story behind Munich. I went to see it because it's Speilberg and that guy's pretty good at making movies....Plus, it's got my homies Geoffrey Rush and Dainel Craig (I've liked this guy every since Layer Cake and I think he'll make a cool Bond) in it.

Music:

The Darkness - One Way Ticket to Hell and Back....: What can I say, they stole my heart with there first album and they've come back and done it again. It's not all great, but I probably like about 7 out of the 10 songs on the album a lot. Great production mixed with super hooky songs and plenty of fun topic matters.

The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth: Here's the deal, I haven't listened to the album that much so I'm not going to really get into it too much. It sounds considerably different than their other albums, mainly due to the production and superious preformances by all the musicians. I'm not saying that this makes it any better though, some things are better left simple. No more.

more to come.....

Men using Women's bathrooms

I’ve just noticed that I include an exclamation mark in almost all of my headers on this damn thing, that’s fucking lame. Not this time!

I really need to get the drive to try and do this on a daily basis, fuck it’s not like I’m doing too much else. I have this desire to write all these epic entries and I never do it.

Anyways, speaking of epic, there has been quite a few epic bands releasing albums recently.

Personally, I was most anticipating the new Queens of the Stone Age album; Lullabies to Paralyze. It dropped this last Tuesday and I was at Best Buy snatching it up first thing. Got to the car, cracked that shit open, and began the rock. One problem, the rock was very few and far between. I figured I should give it a couple days and quite a few listen and then maybe it would set in. This didn’t happen. I think “little sister,” the albums first single, is my favorite so far; and since, you could get that shit on iTunes a month ago, I’ve pretty much rocked that song out waiting on the album. It kind of seems like this should be more of a Dessert Sessions record than QOSTA. Compared to most of the shit that gets put out, this is still a great music. Compared to the other Queens of the Stone Age albums, this seems half assed.

Ever since I got my hands on “Surrounded by Thieves,” I’ve been dying to see what High on Fire was going to do next. “Blessed Black Wings” nearly rocks your nuts off from the start. As a whole it brings the fire and made me extremely happy that they just stuck to there guns and did what they do best, rock out! They did something that they should have done a long time ago on this record and that was record “Cross the Bridge.” A jam so powerful, you would think that the dark lord had written it himself. There’s an on going argument between my friend Chris and I whether or not “Blessed Black Wings” is as good as “Surrounded by Thieves.” I will love “Surrounded by Thieves” forever and will always stay true to it. With that being said, “Blessed Black Wings” is just as good it just wasn’t the first High on Fire album that I heard that happen to change my life.

A few others that I’ve picked up recently that should defiantly check out: Bloc Party-Silent Alarm, Mogwai-Government Commission BBC Sessions 1996-2003, Mars Volta-Frances the Mute, Red Sparowes-at the soundless dawn, shit this could go on for days with all the fucking cd’s I’ve been buying recently! O well, maybe I’ll be less lazy and bust out a few reviews of the bands listed.

Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

Hunter S. Thompson decided to take his life last night. I’m breaking out the “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Criterion Collection" DVD tonight and watching it with commentary that includes Terry Gilliam, Johnny Depp and himself. Through out the duration of the movie I will drink myself stupid and ramble about how cool Hunter S. Thompson is. I’m defiantly confused as to why he would choose to take his life at this point considering all the shit that he’s been through, but then again, the last time I checked there was no “good time” to commit suicide. R.I.P.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://waroftheastronauts.blogspot.com/2005/02/holy-jesus-what-are-these-goddamn.html' title='Holy Jesus. Mainly, in the entire time that I can remember being a huge movie fan, I can never remember when the Oscars have ever really done the films that I thought were the best that year justice. This year seems to be a little bit different, but in the end I’m sure it will be the same old shit.

The most nominated movie this year is “The Aviator.” I saw this movie and thought it was tits up the asshole (quite possibly the highest rating). The movie looked great and it’s been one of the first films I’ve seen in a while that was over two hours that I wasn’t checking my watch to get my lanky ass out of those theater chairs. I’d almost be willing to put money on the fact that it’s going to win “Best Picture” and up until a couple of day’s ago I thought for sure Scorsese would be walking with “Best Director.”

This brings me to my next subject, “Million Dollar Baby.” Over the weekend Clint Eastwood won the “Best Picture” award at the Directors Guild Awards, which all the sudden means that Clint Eastwood has now become the Oscar favorite. Before I start ranting and raving about this movie, let me go ahead and say how much I love Clint Eastwood as an actor and sometimes as a director. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is one of my all time favorite movies and he directed such greats as; “Heartbreak Ridge” (fucking great movie), “Unforgiven,” “Any Which Way but Loose,” and “Mystic River.” Although he is usually great, Clint Eastwood also has also directed some super shitty movies. Come on, did anybody see fucking “Space Cowboys” or “The Rookie?” This brings me to “Million Dollar Baby.” I swear this movie has already been made before, except last time it was called “The Next Karate Kid” and it had fucking Mr. Miyagi in it. O fuck me, how many times do you think this story can be told? That’s right, I hate this movie and I haven’t even scene it. How else do you think I could be so vague about what I don’t like about this movie?

Let me just get down to it, I love “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” I think it’s the work of a visual genius and one of the greatest screen writers out there. You’ve got Michel Gondry teaming up with Charlie Kaufman, how could this movie suck. I know, I saw “Human Nature” and it concerned me a little, but this film meet every expectation I had set for it. I’m a sucker for visually pleasing things and this movie made my eyes and mind bust one nutt after another. The fact that the film wasn’t selected for editing, cinematography, or best director, makes me crazy. I guess I just saw something in this movie that the douche bags “Academy” didn’t.

Big up’s to movies like “Hotel Rwanda,” “Motorcycle Diaries,” and “A Very Long Engagement,” which will probably walk away from these awards empty handed. Know that you are ten times better than the likes of “Collateral” and “The Passion of the Christ.”

In the end, I’m sure I will still want to punch the faces of the non believers. Over though, I do think that the quality of the majority of the movies that were nominated this year are better than the last. I also hope that somebodies titties pop out of there dress on the red carpet, like Scarlett. Even just a single tit, I could live with that.

It's Gravy Baby!

I watched Resident Evil 2 last night and it was so dissapointing that I feel dumb for even mentioning that I've seen it. The "nemisis" looks like a peice of shit. Really, it looks like a fucking turd on top of pair of shoulders with arms, a body, and legs. I mobile peice of shit. Which is pretty much makes sense that they would have a character that resembles shit so much, because that's what this movie is. I sure do hope they make a 3rd one! Fucking morons.

If your an idiot and you don't have Jane Doe by Converge, go out and buy it. Especially if you just broke up girlfriend or boyfriend. I like quite a few bands that "make her pussy explode" and a few that I wasn't familiar with have turned out to be worthy of pussy explosion (if I had one). Most recently I checked out this group Muse that she has been freakin on for some time now. It was produced by Rich Costey (Cave In, new Mars Volta, Rage Against the Machine) and the album sounds great. Anyways, it's good, check that shit out. She's also a freak about The Killers. I haven't heard any of the other cuts off the cd yet, but their song "All these things I've Done" ended up on this new skate vid I got for christmas (Almost Round 3) and I can't stop listening to it. I had seen them on Jimmy Kimmel or some shit and wasn't that impressed, I think I might have to give them another chance and get the cd.

Anyways, here's the list of the top 20 song's I've been jamming this week, it will most likely be totally different next week.

1.Vague Illusions - Cult of Luna

2.Take you on a Cruise - Interpol

3.All these things I've Done - The Killers

4.Backlit - Isis

5.New Health Rock - TV on the Radio

6.Sing For Absolution - Muse

7.Drop Out - Converge

8.Ocean breathes Salty - Modest Mouse

9.Public Pervert - Interpol

10.Adrift - Cult of Luna

11.Iron Tusk - Mastodon

12.Homewrecker - Converge

13.Don't Say Nothin' - The Roots

14.Beginning and the End - Isis

15.Your Retro Career Melted - The Faint

16.Emerald - Thin Lizzy

17.Blood and Thunder - Mastodon

18.Ordinary Story - In Flames

19.Hybrid Moments - The Misfits

20.Altered Course - Isis

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://waroftheastronauts.blogspot.com/2005/01/listmania.html' title='Listmania! Those concerts that I listed a few month ago, well I was able to see quite a few of them.....well actually just the last three listed.

-Gwar put on a great show as usual, could have done without the opening acts. The opening bands were just really played out death metal with nothing to offer at all. Gwar hit the stage and started chopping the heads of random political icons, spraying blood all over the place. I'm not sure what I like best about the show, mainly because I was drunk as hell about 20 min into there set.

-Isis w/Pelican, These Arms are Snakes, and Sweet Cobra. This was defiantly the best show that I have seen in a while. Sweet Cobra started the show off and they really impressed me with a couple of there songs. I'm guessing since At the Drive-in broke up, These Arms are Snakes thought it would be a great idea to rip there style. Well it didn't work and these guys caused me to go into a frantic drinking mode that almost left me retarded by the time Pelican hit the stage. I thought Pelican's set was great and I only had one complaint and it was that their set was entirely too short. Isis came on stage and fucking blew my mind out. They had a fantastic stage presence and they played perfectly in synch with each other. I would give my left nutt to have these guys come back to the states and tour with the bands their currently playing with in Japan (Mastodon and Converge). I might explode if I saw that show. Check out there site, it's got a radio with a bunch of there jams on it.
http://www.sgnl05.com/

-Clutch w/High on Fire and Fu Manchu. Wow, this show started off being one of the biggest fucking pieces of shit ever. First off, we kind of dicked around getting there thinking that Fu Manchu would be the opening act. Well when we finally got in, High on Fire was just finishing up playing. I almost cried because they were the main reason I was even attending this show. Then like a kick to the mouth, Fu Manchu gets on stage. Fu Manchu is fucking horrible, really horrible. Just like These Arms are Snakes, I resorted to drinking heavily and smoking cigs at an ungodly rate. By the time Clutch got on stage I was completely hammed and ready to party. Clutch is a great band to see, whether you know there music or not. The show wasn't as good as the last one that I saw, I think that had allot to do with the venue which was a piece of shit. The sound was poopy. Over all the night was only redeemed when a friend Bob got us lost and close to being killed, then bought us a shit load of food from a hotdog joint. Bob you are forgiven.

The shows were worth all the traveling and bullshit but I'm glad there's not to many worth seeing for a couple of months. I'm toying with the thought of going to see the Motley Crue reunion tour.

Well, thats that. Recently I've been rocking the fairly new Cult of Luna ablum titled "Salvation." It's fantastic but a bitch to get right now because they it's on back order if your trying to buy it. I've actually also been listening to the new Modest Mouse joint quite a bit. I never thought I would say that but it's been said.
If your aware of any great new jams, leave a comment. I'm always on the prowl for new music.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://waroftheastronauts.blogspot.com/2004/12/im-going-to-attempt-to-poop-upside.html' title='I'm going to attempt to poop upside down. Mainly due to the fact that Mastodon came out with there new release Leviathan. Which has probably become my favorite release this year so far. Then again, were pretty far into the year and I always get all fucked up about what came out when. Bottom line, it's really good. There is definatly a few things about the production of the music that I would have changed but, the changes are minor. I could carry on but, see and listen for your self. Here's a link to a website with the video "Iron Tusk" (which was banned from mtv2 due to a few sceens with people suspending there bodies from hooks). There's also a couple other cool videos on there; Neurosis - Crawl Back In, and Mastodon - March of the Fire Ants.

http://www.supercolliderfilms.com/index.html

Linda and I have fallen for one another.

Life some times has a stupid way of cracking you in the face.

Don't let the bong freak your junk.

You like Concerts?

If you live anywhere within a two hour radius of Chicago, then let me just inform you of how many crazy shows are going down before the end of the year. Tickets not on sale yet.

If you’re questioning the Gwar suggestion...you've obviously never seen them and have no idea. I am fortunate enough to have an older brother who takes the time to introduce me to certain entertainers that missed my generation. The only exposure I have ever had to Gwar was the couple of times they showed up on Beavis and Butthead. Let me tell you, we went to a show at the same place (Canopy Club = cool place+cheap ass beer) and it was hands down one of the coolest shows I've ever seen. Dress appropriately, you might get blood and piss sprayed on you.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://waroftheastronauts.blogspot.com/2004/09/you-like-concerts.html' title='You like Concerts? Check it out:

http://www.hxcmp3.com/bands/1606/

This site also has a track off of the Red Sparowes. Red Sparowes consists of members from Isis and Neurosis along with a few other groups. Haven't had the chance to listen to the track yet. But, with it being members of those two groups I'm not sure you can go wrong. It's due out on Nuerot Recordings (Neurosis's record label), February 22nd, 2005.

Numero Uno!

I stumbled across something fantastic last night. There's a song off the new Isis album Panopticon on the web. It can be found at:

http://www.southern.net/southern/catalog/ISIS0

If you are unfamiliar with Isis, I suggest you get there as soon as possible and check them out. A friend introduced me to this band about 4 months ago and after I heard the first track off Oceanic I was immediately hooked (thanks Chris!). There is a few random cd's out there of this band and ton's of remix cd's but, if your really interested stick with the full albums Celestial and Oceanic. There is tons of remix stuff off of Oceanic and I haven't really been impressed by any of it. The new one Panopticon hits shelves October 18th.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://waroftheastronauts.blogspot.com/2004/09/numero-uno.html' title='Numero Uno!
